Corrugated steel pipes (CSPs) are widely used to construct culverts. Abrasion and corrosion are now common causes of CSP deterioration. Owing to its ease of use and low cost, cementitious spray lining is being employed to rehabilitate CSP culverts in terms of both structural strength and hydraulic performance. However, the performance of rehabilitated CSP has not been adequately studied and existing standards lack design guidelines encompassing spray lining. Moreover, these standards fail to properly account for overburden/vehicle loads which can be the source of most of the demand on the rehabilitated pipe system. Researchers have used full scale testing to investigate the performance of circular steel pipes lined with sprayed cementitious liners, and have proposed design methods for selecting the liner thickness sufficient to ensure adequate strength of the sprayed liner within a circular CSP. However, the proposed design methods have not yet been extended to include non-circular sewers. Hence, the main goal of the proposed research would be to conduct modeling/analysis of deteriorated CSP of various geometries with non-circular cross-sections under different loading and field conditions in order to analyze pipe and liner performance and response. The analysis of both deteriorated and rehabilitated pipes can reveal how the sprayed liner will contribute to enhancing the load bearing capacity and service load response of the CSP. Based on the findings, a design procedure for rehabilitation of non-circular pipes using cementitious spray lining will be proposed. The proposed research will establish design guidelines for spray-on liners and the calculations for required liner thickness, and better understanding of how this rehabilitation technique improves pipe strength and life expectancy. These advances represents a substantial competitive advantage for the partner company, so they can offer their clients more cost-effective rehabilitation options. Municipal and provincial infrastructure owners can save from 30% to 60% of rehabilitation costs compared to conventional pipe replacement, saving millions of dollars on an annual basis across Canada.****
