High-speed communication systems and technologies are an inseparable part of modern life, where they enable**a range of applications from self-driving cars to high-speed home networks for Internet and video services.**These service providers are always in need for new technologies to boost the bandwidth and increase the**number of channels and data without paying a prohibitive penalty in size and power dissipation. High-speed**communication technologies require fast circuit components for their realization, regular operation, and**payload testing. Among a variety of electronic components, analog to digital converters (ADCs) play a critical**role that is essential for modern high-speed communication systems. ADCs enable digital signal processors**(DSPs) to eliminate electronic noise and distortion and retrieve high quality signals by converting analog**signals to digital form. Recently, complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology has offered**transistors with shrinking channel sizes down to 22nm that allow for ultra high speed switching and digital**processing performance. However, in the analog domain, their performance can be limited due to lower gain**and output impedance compared to other alternatives. In this proposal, we will design, simulate, fabricate, and**test a high-speed, high resolution ADC for high data rate communication purposes (ie. 1-5 Gsps). The**following challenges will be studied in the course of this proposal and potential solutions will be investigate: a)**Fabrication technology, system structure and processing units versus performance; b) Compatibility of the**newly designed ADC with MaxLinears current signal chain. The design and implementation of an ADC with**the mentioned aspects enabling the Canadian division of Maxlinear to bring further development and**opportunities to Canadian Society.
