The use of antibiotics in agriculture has seen many changes over the last few years. Most notably, all medically important antibiotics for veterinary use can now only be obtained by prescription. These and other changes led to the reduction or elimination of antibiotics in animal feed. Antibiotics in feed has been used for decades and their use has shown very positive therapeutic effects, such as improved feed conversion, reduced morbidity, and less clinical and subclinical disease in Canadian livestock. With the new restrictions on antibiotic use, Canadian livestock industries are actively seeking alternatives to antibiotics to add to feed to act as 'growth/health promoters'. Proveta Nutrition, Ltd. has a product called GoldEdge+ that improved the number of eggs produced by layer chickens which suggests that it may positively impact their productivity and health. We will perform microbiological analyses to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of GoldEdge+ needed to kill or inhibit the growth of field isolates of Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis, Streptococcus suis, Clostridium perfringens and Lawsonia intracellularis. The bacteria can infect poultry, pigs and cattle so information on GoldEdge+ antimicrobial activity on them may potentially impact several of Canada's livestock industries.
