The proposed research focuses on improving the operational efficiency of Vaderstad disk openers with optimized disk geometry and properly induced vibration applying on the disk openers. The objective of this study is to find the effect of major parameters related to the disk shape and induced vibration in it on: (1) change of the direction of friction force between the disk and soil, (2) elastic deformation of contact surface, and (3) change of friction coefficient.Factors such as: normal load on the paired surface, contact surface topology, direction of the vibration, amplitude/frequency of the induced vibration, and the cutting velocity will be modeled within a simulation environment first. Via conventional numerical optimization methods, the most influential factors will be identified and ranked. A lab-scale setup will be developed for hypothesis testing and evaluation. The experimental setup would consist of a vibrating cutting tool, a disk, and a compact-soil specimen, whose compactness, texture, and water content can be controlled.
