Efficacy and Mechanisms of Action of Functional Food Components in Relation to Human HealthResearch will focus on three themes. For theme (1) the primary objective is to examine plant sterol metabolism in sitosterolemia as well as explore efficacy and safety of novel plant sterol derivatives. For theme (2) international expert groups will be convened to define boundaries between foods versus drugs, assess the socioeconomic impact of using functional foods in the marketplace, and consider of essentiality for functional food bioactive components. Efficacy and safety of functional food and nutraceutical bioactives including dietary oils, and fibers will be undertaken. For theme (3), mechanisms of actions accounting for lipid lowering actions will be probed using stable isotope approaches in studies centering on weight loss, perinatal nutrition and variability of responsiveness.
