Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is an optical technique to remotely measure flow velocities without disturbing the flow. Funds are requested to replace an old PIV system with a new and advanced system. The current PIV system was funded through NSERC RTI grants and its main components have either reached or passed the expected working life and have already experienced major technical problems requiring repair. Hence, the current PIV system could suffer a catastrophic failure at any time, which has severe consequences on the research programs supported by the current system, the HQP training and the completion time of student theses.******The requested PIV equipment is an ultra-high-resolution system, which will allow measurement of the dynamical behaviour of flows over a wide range of scales. This will enable researchers and their teams to enhance their diverse research programs (covering energy and environment to biomedical and modelling/diagnostic tools) with the focus on advancement of fundamental knowledge, cutting-edge discoveries and practical applications. The requested equipment will provide unique opportunities for the training of HQP and is expected to promote equity, diversity and inclusion. The innovative and advanced research conducted through the requested equipment will contribute to Canada becoming the world leader in science and innovation and will also support efforts towards sustainability and meeting the challenges of climate change.**
