Eight NMR instruments are housed in the Chemistry Department of McGill University and supports the training and research of more than 300 Chemistry HQPs per year in 32 different research groups in that Department. Additionally, there are many other HQPs and PIs from other departments at McGill and other academic institutions within Canada whose research requires the use of these NMR instruments. Therefore, the Helium Recovery Instrument requested by the five co-applicants of this NSERC RTI is submitted on behalf of all the users of the NMR instruments in the Chemistry Department of McGill University. The instrument requested is a necessary upgrade for a sustainable new era in NMR studies, and will allow the optimal use of the PIs' NSERC Discovery Grants for maximum research productivity and HQP training.******Examples of research applications from the five co-applicants include the general use of NMR for characterization of small molecules, characterization of biomolecular interactions with small ligands and mechanistic studies for understanding catalytic transformations. Arndtsen's research focuses on the development of new transition metal catalyzed reactions, which range from metal catalyzed, bond-forming chemistry, multicomponent coupling reactions, to C-H bond functionalizations. As such, his HQPs rely exclusively upon the use of NMR analysis for monitoring reactions and catalyst development. Gleason's research focuses on novel organocatalysts for a range of synthetic transformations, such as polyene cyclizations, oxy-Cope and cycloaddition chemistry. His studies include exploring the fundamental underlying mechanisms, which requires careful kinetic analysis, including 13C isotope experiments, that make extensive use of high-field NMR. Li's research focuses on unconventional and novel chemical transformations that can change the efficiency of chemical synthesis into more Green and Sustainable Chemistry. Each one of his research projects involves extensive liquid and solid-state NMR characterization of compounds and use of NMR for mechanistic studiers. Tsantrizos' research aims to exploit the molecular recognition elements affecting enzymatic and chemically-mediated catalytic processes. Her group is designing phosphorus-containing molecules that can be used as enzyme inhibitors and as ligands in metal-mediated and organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis. In the course of these investigations, NMR studies are required to elucidate the enzyme-bound conformation of ligands and catalyst-substrate interactions. Trempe's investigations focus on elucidating protein-protein interactions involving PINK1 and Parkin, two proteins that work together in a mitochondrial quality control pathway implicated in Parkinson's disease. His investigations require extensive NMR HSQC titration experiments using 15N- and 13C- labeled proteins and high-field spectrometers. **
