Oncogenesis and viral replication require energy and macromolecular precursors that are often derived from the metabolic networks of the host cell. Cancer and viral infections also disrupt the normal production of numerous host proteins that are crucial to cell physiology. My research program aims to provide molecular tools that can be used to explore the biochemical role of metabolic enzymes and other host proteins that are involved in these important disease states. Towards this goal, my group embraces a Chemical Biology approach in addressing key questions that probe the role and interactions between important human proteins, in the context of an intact biological system. These studies can provide valuable innovations at the early stages of new drug discovery programs aiming at developing novel antitumor and antiviral human therapeutics.
