Much of Canada's water service infrastructure is centralized and has reached, or is reaching, the end of its designed life. When considering replacement, significant improvements in economic, environmental and societal goals could be achieved by utilizing more decentralized, separate collection and treatment of blackwater (toilet & kitchen food streams) from the remaining household greywater. There are multiple benefits in source-separated energy positive wastewater treatment systems. Our recent research has developed a SPRING process to treat blackwater. The technology was developed through better understanding of microbial processes during anaerobic digestion (AD) and their control to further maximise. This system has already been tested for blackwater collected from various sources, and at laboratory and micro-pilot scales. To realize the full potential of this integrated design, process demonstration and control optimization at the potential end-user's site are needed. Through this market assessment we will better understand and identify the potential market opportunity for this technology and validate the value proposition with industry key opinion leaders and stakeholders. This will provide critical guidance for the next stages of research and technical development, help to refine and better develop the commercialization strategy.
