5 Star Fitness & Nutrition Centres has been changing lives all over the Hamilton area with its four locationssince 2007. With changes in the fitness industry due to the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, 5 Star'srevenue has been negatively affected from membership reductions. More people than ever are turning to virtualmodalities for their fitness and wellness practices. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, over80% of fitness consumers live-streamed workouts, compared with 7% in 2019. That is a significant increase, and 5 Star needs to innovate to provide virtual solutions for their clients. They would like to develop atechnology-supported service offering for the delivery of virtual fitness and wellness programming. Thedevelopment of this service will ensure 5 Star is competitive in the shift to virtual programming and providesclasses with effective technology leveraged to provide targeted messaging and client support. The 5 Star teamis focused on facility operations, program delivery, and client support, and they are looking for help toinvestigate and develop a targeted technology-based program. A Mohawk College team comprised of Health,Wellness and Fitness professors who are experts in fitness programs, technology-supported delivery and thefitness industry will lead the project and collaborate with 5 Star Fitness to design, deliver, measure, and assessthe virtual program. The project objective is to determine if a targeted technology-based wellness programresults in positive changes in feelings of isolation, cohesion and happiness. This will translate to greatermember engagement, retaining and new member recruitment. Industry statistics suggest that when clubsre-opened, as many as 60% of members did not return due to feelings that COVID-19 was not sufficientlyunder control, with 20% of these members not exercising at all. The project results will provide 5 Star with asustainable technology framework with which they can implement and further develop a fitness and wellnessprogram to serve members and improve mental and physical well-being.
