Amalfitano,E.,Karlikow,M.,Norouzi,M.等人,Nat Commun 12,724(2021)。Shivaprasad,H.
The current market for animal disease diagnostics consists of two key categories of tests: molecular tests, such as the PCR test that must be completed in a fully equipped lab with trained personnel, and rapid tests such as lateral flow antigen tests, which can be performed by users with little training but are known to be unreliable. Recognizing the importance of this challenge, we employed synthetic biology methods to develop a molecular test, consisting of gene circuit-based sensors and cell free expression system (CFS), with a readout that can be interpreted using an off-the shelf blood glucose meter1. The widespread adoption of the glucose meter for diabetes management has resulted in a global network of device manufacturing and distribution, as well as broad acceptance by patients and clinicians for use by trained or naive users. We have recently demonstrated this technology for the detection of several diseases1, including paratyphoid A and B, which affect poultry2 and swine3, and COVID-19. We are adapting our technology to animal disease diagnostics, with the goal to put clinical-grade molecular tests into the hands of veterinarians and farm managers. This is a unique opportunity to provide lower-cost, more reliable diagnostic tests for important animal diseases in the companion animal, equine, or food animal health markets. We are applying to the I2I Market Assessment grant with the goal of reaching out to the industry and potential customers to identify customer needs and target markets. This will help inform and articulate our value proposition, which will allow us to optimize our market entry strategy for successful commercialization of our technology, as well as provide focus for our research and development efforts including selection of new disease targets.1.
