Our proposed solution is to utilize genetically engineered microbes to manufacture renewable elastic fibres. The material of interest has similar properties to luon and can readily be expressed in E. coli. While this has been done by other groups, the cost is prohibitive at $100/kg. Our novelty is in developing a process utilizing yeasts to express and excrete this protein utilizing a media formulation derived from agricutlural by-products. Our process is fully circular and cost-effective. By supplying a green source of elastic fibre at close to the price of synthetic fibres we would solve the "green" dilemma of the fashion industry. Likewise, due to the abundant nature of the feedstock for our material, the cost will remain constant compared to hydrocarbon based materials which will increase as supply steadily becomes more depleted and as carbon taxation further discourages use. Ultimately our fibres would replace existing materials in the at-leisure wear industry.
