The goal of this Alliance International Quantum project is to development of an optical sensor for in situ detection of vaporized hydrogen peroxide (vH2O2) which has been used in different fields and causes the degradation of the membrane of the fuel cell. The collaboration between researchers from Western University, Canada, and the State University of New York at Binghamton (Binghamton University) will achieve the specific objectives as follows: (1) to fabricate quantum materials with special luminescent properties; (2) to design and fabricate an optical sensor made of quantum materials integrated with the catalyst layer of the fuel cell for in situ detection of vH2O2 at trace level. This international collaboration aims to develop a functioning for easier-to-use, more robust, and less complex than the industry-standard sensors. Trainees involved in this proposed project will be exposed to multidisciplinary fields covering quantum materials with special luminescent properties, the design and development of sensor systems for detecting vaporized chemicals, and alternative energy devices. A new nanostructured luminescent sensor system generated from this proposed project will further enhance the collaboration between universities in Canada and universities in the United States in the field of advanced quantum materials, fuel cells, and sensors to fit the current and even future markets.
