Much like cancer does not represent a single disease in terms of finding a cure, the term carbon capture encompasses many different challenges depending on the gas stream the CO2 is being removed from and the optimal options to integrate that composition with a regenerating process. A key hurdle to demonstrate any carbon capture technology is that the fate of the captured CO2 must also be considered. For new technologies seeking to be derisked on a smaller scale, proximity to a sequestration site or pipeline is often not an option. Fermentation sources present a unique opportunity as the captured CO2 can simply be reused onsite say at a brewery for carbonation. This project will use a patented CO2 sorbent from the class of porous solids known as metal-organic rrameworks (MOFs) and derisk for fermentation gas carbon capture. The patented MOF, discovered atthe University of Calgary, is unique in that it is the first MOF in the world deployed industrially for post-combustion carbon capture. The capture mechanism allows CO2 to condense in pores before water. Moreover, the MOF is highly stable and scalable (Science 2021).
