XR Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (XR), and Virtual Reality (VR)) applications are beginning to be adopted in many domains such as engineering, gaming, and education. These applications make it feasible to achieve immersive and rich collaboration between a distributed set of participants. The advent of 5G technology broadens the reach of these applications since they have better coverage than all its predecessors and wired networks. End user Quality-of-Experience (QoE) is a key consideration for these applications. For a truly immersive experience, these applications must provide real-time feedback and delivery. The broad goal of the partnership between TELUS, Red Iron Labs and U of C is to design and prototype an end-to-end XR platform, in which XR components (e.g., video processing and XR rendering) are deployed as microservices in both core and edge clouds. The goal is to provide a platform for deploying XR and other immersive applications over 5G networks in a performance-aware manner, enhancing perceived user experiences. Our work will spark new opportunities for exploiting XR technologies in sectors such as education and medical simulations providing a competitive advantage to our partners as well as other Canadian organizations in these areas. The project will train HQP with skills such as UX, XR, microservices, cloud computing, and edge computing that are in high demand within Canada's IT and telecom sectors.
