Light particles (photons), can, at the single photon level, exist in multiple energy states at the same time. When harnessed properly, this would allow us to build new computers (called quantum computers) that are much faster than conventional computers which rely on information storage based on the charge of electrons. To envisage a new class of efficient and reliable quantum computers, we need excellent materials. By making very thin materials and controlling how light interacts with them, we might be able to write, read and store quantum information. We will use advanced microscopes to make and image these materials, in collaboration with our physics colleagues at the University of Iowa, who will grow and measure the quantum properties of these very thin materials. The technological advancement and knowledge acquired to do this will help Canada develop a new class of quantum technologies and platforms. Successful demonstration of hybrid quantum qubits will lay a strong foundation for the quantum technologies Canada strives to develop. The ultimate benefit of quantum computers and being able to harness quantum states of light reliably in a computer is the ability to develop devices that could help with such computational challenges as cryptography and cybersecurity, biology and chemical simulations to design new molecules and reactions, all important for Canadian welfare and security.
