This partnership between the University of Waterloo and CanmetMATERIALS will evaluate the state-of-the-art laser welding technologies and develop new methods for advanced laser welding of pipeline steels and dissimilar materials. Two particular application areas will be studied: pipeline thick-section steel welds, and dissimilar aluminum to steel welds for transportation structures. A new state-of-the-art hybrid laser welding will be used to optimize and determine the advantages of technologies such as hot-wire and multi-wire feeding, beam oscillation, and laser depth dynamic sensing for both thick-plate steel and thin-sheet dissimilar joining. The details of implementing these technologies and optimizing their parameters will help industries to adopt them in the field, with results being disseminated about the processing and material performance to the broader scientific community and broader industry. New data will provide and unbiased assessment of the capabilities of these technologies, help train new engineers to implement these technologies in the field.
