This project will aim to expand on previous work at HWU to investigate ultra-fast laser welding of crystals where there is significant potential for applications across the field f optical device engineering. Key research questions will include fundamental laser-material interactions as well as the structures formed from placing a weld in these highly organized material latices. One of the key applications we will consider will be the fabrication of non-linear crystal devices where laser welding presents a new, and extremely exciting, capability. The PhD student appointed will work alongside an existing EPSRC funded project (EP/V01269/X) and EORARD Project (21IOE036) but examining a specific body of independent research - laser welding of crystal materials for device fabrication.
