Summary of the research program: Recent advances in atomic physics, nanotechnology, and material science allow controlling the quantum state of atoms, microscopic and mesoscopic spins, electrical circuits and mechanical oscillators with individual photons, electrons or phonons. Today's major challenge is the design and coherent control of hybrid quantum networks. This will turn quantum engineering into a highly interdisciplinary field of research. One of the most advanced solid-state systems for processing quantum information is based on integrated superconducting circuits coupled and manipulated with microwave photons. While electrical circuits are ideally suited for fast logical operations and state synthesis, telecom wavelength photons are the candidates of choice for quantum communication due to their weak interaction with the environment, large bandwidth of transmission and resiliency to thermal noise. A coherent transducer between the microwave and the optical domains will bring together the advantages of the most promising systems. Electro-Optomechanical (EOM) systems are among one of the best candidates to bridge the microwave and optical domains and therefore can be served as a key ingredient of the future quantum network. I have experience in fabrication and characterization of a microscale silicon EOM system whose mechanical motion is coupled capacitively to an electrical circuit and optically via radiation pressure to a photonic crystal cavity. Besides, I theoretically have shown, for the first time, that the stationary, i.e., long-lived, microwaveoptical entanglement can be generated in such a hybrid EOM device. This research program focuses on developing quantum technology that is integrable with superconducting processors for building large-scale quantum networks and ultimately create quantum internet. From the theoretical perspective, we will develop the theory of the photon conversion and focus on the new techniques to achieve high-efficient photon transduction using hybrid EOM systems. In the experimental front, we will design, fabricate, and measure the samples to generate quantum interface between microwave and optical domains. In summary, during the next five years, we aim to: 1) build on-chip optical-microwave photon converter, 2) generate entanglement between microwave and optical photons, and 3) perform quantum state teleportation. Benefits to Canada: This research program will raise new opportunities to place the University of Calgary and especially Canada among the leaders of the quantum information and quantum computation. It will build significant capacity in this area and provide excellent training for students. Additionally, it will boost the collaborations among scientists throughout Canada, train a new generation of scientists with a solid background in the field of quantum network, and foster the synergy with the industry by transferring the technology and knowledge to the Canadian industry.
