Type I (T1) diabetes is characterized by hypoinsulinemia and hyperglycemia as a consequence of decreased glucose uptake by insulin-sensitive cells. When T1 diabe-tes is poorly controlled, weight loss occurs and is manifested by a decrease in both muscle and peripheral fat mass. This sug-gests that anabolic, tissue-building proc-esses are suppressed. Correspondingly, bone formation is decreased and can lead to bone loss in T1 diabetic humans and rodent models
