Classical conditioning of the eyeblink response in both humans and experimental animals has provided an enormous amount of information about basic associative learning. There is no limit in sight to how far conditioning studies can advance understanding of associative learning and its neural substrates. We have demonstrated the utility of comparing delay and trace differential conditioning in combination with awareness measures in healthy volunteers and amnesic patients. Our findings suggest how brain memory systems may participate and interact in the formation of new memories. Though many technical and theoretical challenges remain to be addressed, it is clear that the human eyeblink classical conditioning paradigm is a powerful tool that can be used to advance understanding of brain memory systems and the cognitive factors that influence them.
