Solar-powered sea slugs are the only known metazoans capable of stealing functional chloroplasts from their algal food, retaining them for months while staving off death by starvation—presumably due to these stolen plastids (Kawaguti & Yamasu, 1965; Trench, Greene & Bystrom, 1969), although this is still debated (Klochkova et al., 2010; Rauch et al., 2017a).
