We used a crossover design to compare participants' verbal response mode (VRM) profiles in two treatments, an interpersonal/psychodynamic treatment labeled exploratory and a cognitive/behavioral treatment labeled prescriptive. Each client received eight sessions of each treatment with the same therapist throughout, which allowed for tests of the effects of theoretical approach on VRM use independently of differences between therapists. All therapist and client utterances in 50%(four sessions) of each treatment were coded for each of 39 clients. Comparisons showed large therapist VRM differences between the treatments that were consistent with the theoretically different goals of exploratory therapy and prescriptive therapy sessions.
