People enter relationships with desires and preconceived notions regarding what the present and future hold. Relationships, however, rarely last merely on desires and preconceived notions. This chapter details how interdependent situations can influence attachment security. Some situations may activate a sense of risk and require benevolent and skilled partners to buffer insecurities. Other situations may foster a sense of worthiness or comfort with closeness and trust toward others. In that way, people learn about the risks of interdependence through being interdependent with others. The chapter describes the Attachment Security Enhancement Model (ASEM), a novel dual-process model illustrating the power of interdependent relationships to enhance security over time. This model integrates attachment-and interdependence based frameworks within an overarching model of specific situations that may foster security. Understanding key situations, past and present, that may influence attachment orientations lies at the heart of the ASEM. The chapter describes hypothetical couples to exemplify relevant concepts throughout the chapter (eg, working models, interpersonal" situations"). It provides an overview of the ASEM and elaborates on the processes that lead attachment orientations to change. The chapter concludes by briefly summarizing the main ideas and implications.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
