Job control has been considered one of the key aspects of the work environment that affects employees' health. In this chapter, the author describes control as a basic human need. In the work environment, the demand-control model of stress characterizes control as decision latitude--that is, authority over decisions and intellectual discretion. The author describes the demand-control model and reviews the evidence linking decision latitude to cardiovascular disease as well as the risk of cardiovascular disease including providing a description of the mechanisms by which this link occurs.
