In response to tissue damage, the lung initiates a highly orchestrated sequence of events designed to repair the injured tissue. This timely order of cellular responses to tissue damage has been described for other organs and probably represents a general biologic response to injury (1, 2). Exposure of animals to high inspired concentrations of oxygen provides a reproducible model to study lung injury and repair. Acute oxidant injury initially produces an inflammatory phase characterized by pulmonary edema and accumulation of immune effector cells within the lung (3, 4).
