Under certain pathological conditions, germinal centers (GCs) form in many atypical sites, such as the stomach, lung and synovial joints. Thus, understanding the cellular and molecular interactions leading to a GC response is relevant not only for protective immunity but also for possible therapeutic strategies. Here, recent studies concerning the generation of GC reactions are reviewed.
