The article discusses indicators of immune responses in gingival fluid and their relationship to periodontal homeostasis. The polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) is recognized as critical to periodontal disease. Experimental periodontitis in animals indicate that progressive periodontitis in animals is associated with the development and persistence of an intense acute inflammatory response while, that in children and adults indicate the PMN defects. The primary source of collagenase in gengival crevicular fluid is the PMN. It suggets that, an exuberant PMN response can be associated with active periodontitis.
