Since the test became available in mid-2013, nearly 800 samples from felids (mostly pet cats but also some zoo species) have been tested from approximately 600 unique individuals. Shortly, we will be contacting you to request clinical history and follow-up of these cases; we are interested in the clinical signs the cat presented with, the results of any additional diagnostics, what treatment was given, and how the cat responded. In those cats where there are concerns over the ability to safely and calmly obtain blood samples, we suggest giving 50 to 100 mg gabapentin, orally6, 7 or 50 to 100 mg trazodone, orally, 90 minutes before the cat is taken to the clinic for sampling. 8, 9 A chicken-flavoured liquid version of gabapentin is available through BOVA UK Laboratories and Summit Veterinary Pharmaceuticals.
