Science in Developing Countries Workshop on "Socio-Economic Development in the Southeast Pacific Rim: Methods and Issues," Bandung, Indonesia, July 3-7, 1990

This award will support travel by ten US scholars and ten Southeast Asian scholars to participate in the first Pacific Regional Science Congress (PRSCO) Institute Workshop on "Socio-Economic Development in the Southeast Pacific Rim: Methods and Issues," to be held in Bandung, Indonesia, 3-7 July 1990. The Workshop will be hosted by the Bandung Institute of Technology and is sponsored by NSF and the PRSCO Institute and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Workshop will seek to identify the priority research agenda in socio-economic development, in particular, development methods and issues in Southeast Asian countries. Topics will include: the impact of rapid urbanization on national socio-economic growth; infrastructure development vs. economic growth; strategies for decentralization of socio-economic activities; the role of the private sector in development; technology transfer; financing urban develop- ment; debt for development swaps; environmental issues; strategies for multinational collaboration in regional development; the role of non-governmental organizations (NGO's) in socio-economic development.
