Modern Applied Optics Laboratory

正在实施一门现代应用光学的综合讲授和实验课程。这门课程主要面向物理三年级和四年级学生，但其他理工科学生也会被吸引。该课程的目标是：(1)提高学生对物理在“现实世界”中有用的认知；(2)提高物理学毕业生的就业前景；(3)增加在实验物理中有用的现有技术和方法的“实践”经验的机会。该实验室包括光学辐射探测器、光电激光光束操纵、全息术、光学图像处理和光纤光学的实验。本课程可作为本系其他应用物理课程的原型。最终目标是让少数族裔学生更多地参与到科学事业中来。美国国家科学基金会的拨款将与非联邦来源的资金相匹配。

An integrated lecture-laboratory course in contemporary Applied Optics is being implemented. The course is addressed mainly to physics juniors and seniors, but other science and engineering students will be attracted to it. The objectives of the course are: (1) improvement of student's perception of physics as useful in the "real world"; (2) enhancement of prospect of employment by industry of physics graduates, and (3) increase of opportunity for "hands on" experience in current techniques and methods useful in experimental physics. The laboratory includes experiments in optical radiation detectors, optoelectronic laser beam manipulation, holography, optical image processing, and fiber optics. This course serves as a prototype for other courses in applied physics in the department. The final goal is the increased participation of minority students in science careers.NSF grant funds are being matched with funds from non-federal sources.
