Focused ultrashort laser pulses with high intensity is often used in biomedical research and treatment. Recently ultrashort-pulsed lasers have been used not only for two-photons microscopy but also in high resolution in vivo imaging of mouse brain through the intact skull. In therapy, we have shown new cancer radiotherapy based on femtosecond IR laser-beam filamentation (R. Meesat et al. PNAS vol. 109, E2508-E2513 (2012), Patent USA 13/580,038 (2012), PCT WO2011/109907 A1 (2011), Patent CA PCT/CA2011/000273, Korean PCT 5-2012-048051-9 (2011)). In radiobiology and radiotherapy ultrashort laser pulses generate low energy electrons (LEE), known as low-density plasma in a nonlinear photonic process called filamentation. This laser-induced LEE using adaptive optics method can be used for biological function modulation. To achieve this spatially microscopic control of the low-density plasma, we will introduce a programmable Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). An adaptive optics method will be generated using the SLM and will be applied to the control of the femtosecond laser filamentation for radiobiology and radiotherapy applications. The microscopic control of the LEE femtosecond plasma deposition can be auto-regulated and independent of the specific ultrashort laser. This laser plasma micro-beam will be used for future treatments (radiobiology and radiotherapy), imaging and more generally modulation of biological functions.
