Techniques for Testing Database Applications

Although considerable research effort has been devotedto assuring correctness and efficiency of database managementsystems, little attention has been paid to assuring the correctnessof the application programs that run on these systems. Failure ofdatabase application programs can have severe economic impact, sodevelopment of techniques for testing them is of obvious importance.This research project involves development of software testingtechniques targeted specifically to database application programs. Itincludes development of techniques for generating database statesthat are useful for testing the given application and techniques forchecking the database state after running a test. The techniquesstudied are partially automated, relying on the user to supply someinformation and deriving other information automatically. They usethe integrity constraints described in the database schema as asource of information to aid in test generation and checking. Aprototype testing tool is being developed. Preliminary evaluationsof the effectiveness and usability of the techniques will beperformed with the aid of the tool prototype.
