Level of Detail Selection Using a Perceptual Error MetricThis grant will investigate the use of visual difference metrics inlevel of detail calculations. The research will make it possible toevaluate the visual detectability of changes to an objectrepresentation in addition to the geometric difference that suchmodifications make to the object's surface definition. Factors thatwill be taken into account using a single visual metric includeeyepoint position and surface texture. The context in which theobject is placed, including the effect of lighting, will also beevaluated. The research will explore the impact that each dimensionhas on the final level of detail and will derive an efficient visualdifference metric that can be used in conjunction with existinggeometric measures.
