Proposal Number: CCR-9988409PI: Lee, InsupCo-PI: Sokolsky, OlegUniversity of PennsylvaniaAn Integrated Approach to Improving Design-Time and Run-Time ConfidenceThe proposed research addresses two ways to improve confidence insoftware systems: design-time analysis and run-time monitoring. Thedesign-time analysis is to verify design specifications with respectto requirements, whereas the run-time monitoring is to assure that animplementation is behaving as required. The proposed research willimprove design-time analysis by means of domain-specific extensions toanalysis techniques and tools. An extension for a chosen domain willbe based on specification patterns typical of the domain, and ondomain-specific abstraction mechanisms. Furthermore, the design-timeanalysis approach will be integrated with the run-time monitoring andchecking approach. Since the success of this integration work willdepend on the characteristics of specific domains, the identificationof such characteristics will be part of the proposed work. Theproposed work will be performed in the context of framework forend-to-end system development of high confidence software, based on asuite of methods and tools for the specification, analysis,development, testing, prototyping, simulation and monitoring. Theintegration of design-time analysis and run-time monitoring is the keynovel aspect of the proposed work. The proposed work will beevaluated on a collection of applications chosen to represent domainsrequiring high confidence and real-time requirements, such as embeddedsystems and electronic commerce systems.
