项目摘要
Weidman0109132 There are tremendous opportunities to increase ourunderstanding of biological and biomedical research challengesthrough mathematical and statistical methods. But it is not easyfor researchers to collaborate on these topics because of ahistorical gulf that separates the disciplines. In order toovercome that gulf, the Board on Mathematical Sciences of theNational Research Council, in collaboration with the NRC's Boardon Life Sciences, holds a workshop, involving some 70 peopleacross the disciplines, to (1) stimulate some new collaborationsand insights on the spot and (2) provide an introduction formathematical scientists (disseminated via print and the Internet)of some mathematical research directions that contribute toimportant ongoing research in the biological and biomedicalsciences. At the workshop, leading researchers in dynamical modelingof cellular functions, in modeling of disease states, and inneuroscience describe some of the major research challenges intheir fields. They do not limit themselves to "mathematical"challenges; workshop discussions are focused on identifying themathematical and statistical research that should be undertakenin order to advance the biological and biomedical researchagendas. By involving a broad range of mathematical scientists, the workshop brings a number of different perspectives and ideasto bear on the open questions raised by the presentations. Theaim is to stimulate a wide-ranging discussion and distill out thebest ideas. The workshop's summary will be widely disseminatedin order to give many more mathematical scientists the basicunderstanding needed to become engaged in biological andbiomedical research.
