The investigator and her colleagues collaborate in a groupproject at the Center for BioDynamics (CBD) to provideinterdisciplinary education and training for graduate studentsand postdoctoral-level investigators in the context of a vigorousinterdisciplinary research program that focuses on areas ofmutual interest in mathematics (especially dynamical systems),biology, and engineering. Disciplines include mathematics,biomedical engineering, aerospace/mechanical engineering,biology, psychology, and physics. Training extends beyond theusual classroom activities by engaging participants in a varietyof research projects as well. One of the major topics is dynamicsof the nervous system. The projects, which involve experiments,modeling, and analysis, all deal with the variety of rhythms inthe nervous system and the potential functions of these rhythmsin key cognitive states and processes such as attention,awareness, learning, and recall. A second major topic isdynamics of gene expression. Progress in genomic research isleading to maps of the building blocks of biology and fueling thestudy of gene regulation, where proteins often regulate their ownproduction or that of other proteins in a complex web ofinteractions. CBD projects focus on using techniques fromnonlinear dynamics, statistical physics, control theory, andmolecular biology to model, design, and construct synthetic generegulatory networks, and to probe naturally occurring generegulatory networks. The third major topic is the dynamics ofpatterns and waves. Training activities include two weeklyworking seminars, extra journal clubs and reading groups,seminars to educate the CBD members in the research going onwithin the Center, and a CBD-initiated team-taught course. The Center for BioDynamics (CBD) helps to advanceunderstanding of difficult interdisciplinary problems at theintersection of mathematics, biology, and engineering, and ittrains mathematicians, scientists, and engineers for the 21stcentury workforce. It does this by combining traditionalclassroom education with significant engagement of students andpostdocs in interdisciplinary teams working on current problems.The disciplines involved are mathematics, biomedical engineering,aerospace/mechanical engineering, biology, psychology, andphysics. One of the major topics is dynamics of the nervoussystem. The projects in this topic seek to shed light on theorigin of the electrical activity in the brain, and how the brainuses this activity to process sensory information, to think, andto regulate movement. A second major topic is dynamics of geneexpression. The web of interactions among the proteins that areproduced by genes is complex; the projects associated with thistopic involve the design and construction of artificial generegulatory networks, and techniques to better understandnaturally occurring gene regulatory networks. The third majortopic is the dynamics of patterns and waves, occuring in avariety of applications. Training activities include two weeklyworking seminars, regular sessions to read scientific journals,seminars to educate the CBD members in the research going onwithin the Center, and a CBD-initiated team-taught course. Theproject is supported by the Computational Mathematics, AppliedMathematics, Computational Neuroscience, and Biological Databasesand Informatics programs and by the MPS Office ofMultidisciplinary Activities.
