AbstractAward: DMS-0300055Principal Investigator: Charles I. SteinhornThis project funds travel awards to graduate students in logic tosupport their participation in the Annual Meetings and theEuropean Summer Meetings (Logic Colloquia) of the Association forSymbolic Logic. These two events are arguably the most importantmeetings in the field of logic; since their inception, they havebeen international scientific meetings of the highest standard ofexcellence. The Association works to ensure that these meetingscover logic comprehensively and that they represent the highestquality work being done in this field. They accordingly haveprovided important opportunities for intellectual exchange, thusacting as a stimulus to advancement of research. For graduatestudents in logic, the opportunity to attend one or both of theseASL meetings is an indispensible component of seriousparticipation in the profession. The Association for Symbolic Logic is the leading internationalprofessional society for logicians, whose membership includesresearchers in computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, mathematics, and philosophy. It organizes and sponsors a numberof important meetings. Most prominent among these are its AnnualMeeting, held each year in North America, and its European SummerMeeting. The Association also has met for many years at the JointMathematics Meetings and with the American PhilosophicalAssociation. Recent sponsored meetings have taken place in Asia,Australia, Europe, and North and South America. During the lastfew years, the Association has actively sought to increase therange and number of meetings of which it is a sponsor. Aparticular aim of this effort is to embrace new and emergingfields in which logic has come to play an important role, including computer science, linguistics, and cognitivescience. This project will permit the continuation of asuccessful program of graduate student travel awards that theAssociation has administered since 1993 and that has been partlyfunded by NSF since 1997. The program has proved to be a highlyeffective means of bringing students in logic to importantprofessional meetings at which they can meet and exchange ideaswith leading logicians, an experience which is a vital componentin training future Ph.D.'s in the field. Almost fifty percent ofthe awards funded by N.S.F. during the period 1998-2001 (thefirst N.S.F.-supported awards were made in 1998) went to studentswho subsequently have earned their Ph.D.'s in logic. Furtherinformation on the Association may be found on its web site:http://www.aslonline.org.
