The success and synergistic value of the proposed interdisciplinary and international research unit critically depend on management, administration and coordination of the research unit. Logistic and scientific management, administration and coordination form part of this subproject Z1, and the central database, scientific integration and data synthesis form part of subproject Z2. Accordingly, the main objectives of this subproject Z1 are: • To ensure the smooth logistic, administrative and scientific management of the research unit both in Tanzania and Germany. This will involve establishing and maintaining the administrative links with all involved partners, acquiring all necessary permits, implementation and maintenance of research plots, research stations, common experimental gardens, and maintenance of central equipment such as cars and laboratory instrumentation and financial administration in Tanzania and Germany. • To coordinate the research activities of the eight subprojects in the field and lab in Tanzania and Germany. This will involve the coordination of German and Tanzanian PhD students and student research assistants, supervision of drivers and local helpers, organisation of project workshops and stakeholder meetings in Tanzania, and of training workshops and project meetings in Germany.
