Doctoral Dissertation Research: Beyond Failure and Forgiveness

本研究的目的是通过美国破产的例子来描述现代社会经济结构的文化逻辑的一种排列。PI将通过多地点，多方法的方法来完成这项工作，结合与马里兰州一家大型公司的破产案件律师的访谈，与参与最近破产改革立法通过的美国众议院和参议院成员的讨论，以及对美国破产申请的历史/档案研究。结果将更全面地了解债务人身份的社会建构。更清晰地描绘了债务在更大的社会经济话语中的地位。

The purpose of this study is to describe one permutation of the cultural logic of modern socio-economic structures through the example of bankruptcy in the United States. The PI will do so through a multi-site, multi-method approach, combining interviews with attorneys working on bankruptcy cases for a large Maryland firm, discussions with members of the U.S. House and Senate involved in the passage of recent bankruptcy reform legislation, and historical/archival research on bankruptcy petitions in the U.S. The result will be a fuller understanding of the social construction of debtor identity, and a clearer picture of the place of debt in the larger socioeconomic discourse.
