GallowayThe Isaac Newton Institute for the Mathematical Sciences isrunning a semester long program on Global Problems inMathematical Relativity (GMR) in Cambridge, England from Augustto December, 2005. The purpose of this award is to providepartial travel and subsistence support for U. S. participants.The general aim of the GMR program is to bring together expertsin the field, along with early career researchers and graduatestudents, to discuss recent striking advances in mathematicalaspects of general relativity and related theories of gravity,and to address existing problems and challenges. The programconsists of three focused conferences: (1) New Directions inNumerical Relativity, (2) Global General Relativity, and (3) TheConstraint Equations, together with a series of thematicworkshops that will run throughout the course of the program. TheGMR program coincides with the 100 year anniversary of Einstein'sSpecial Theory of Relativity. General Relativity, Einstein'sgeometric theory of gravity, which incorporates the specialtheory, has proven to be an extraordinarily accurate theory ofgravity at both the local astrophysical and cosmologicalscales. The results of the collaborative research and analysis tobe carried out during the program will have a significant bearingon various fundamental physical problems, such as the issue ofthe final state of gravitational collapse, and its implicationsfor the detection of gravitational radiation. Participation ofgraduate students and recent PhD's is a key component of theprogram, and is crucial to the continuing vitality of the area.
