NSF 0516807SGER: Preventing Voice SpammingPI: Ram Dantu This research addresses a potentially serious vulnerability in next generation voice communications: the risk that Internet-style spam messages may propagate into the voice telephone network. The proposed methodology uses a combination of trust, reputation and presence functions for filtering incoming calls in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network. The research incorporates user feedback via a 'spam' button on the IP phone. The work will investigate synergies among different methods related to social behavior that can help reduce the number of false alarms generated by the mechanism. Data from live networks will be sought in order to validate the proposed methods. The results from this work will be available for reuse in heterogeneous networks such as SS7 over IP.
