Recovery for Service-Oriented Applications

The server software, called an SOA, orService-Oriented Application, is realized as a process and providesits service through an interface consisting of application methods. Aclient, either an end client application or another SOA, uses the SOAservice via remote procedure call to application methods. Manymission-critical electronic business application servers fit thismodel.The recovery model is tiered. The innermost tier consists of sharedmemory (application variables shared by the different threads of theserver process). The middle tier, called a service domain, consists oftightly-coupled SOAS. Optimistic logging is used within the servicedomain. Optimistic logging does not write log records to disk beforesending messages and is thus low-overhead. Communication outside theservice domain uses pessimistic logging, where log records are writtento disk before messages are sent. Special result logging is used tocommunicate with transactional systems such as DBMSs.The results of this research will help provide availability forapplications which use web services. Since many mission-criticalelectronic business application servers fit this model, the greatestimpact of this research will be in increasing availability for thoseservers and hence for the applications which depend on them. Inaddition, the project will be used in training of Computer SciencePh.D. students, currently a national priority.
