This experimental research program aims to deploy a number of new experimental tools, including those of optical microscopy, to explore new directions with Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). One experiment will use Bragg scattering to measure the microscopic velocity field of vortices. Another experiment will observe the three-dimensional character of vortices by spatially selective imaging of a rotating BEC. Finally, atoms will be transported into a glass chamber free of any obstructions from magneto-optical trapping beams, and where the spatial resolution and working distance can enter the realm of the optical microscope. The broader impact of the program involves student training as well as connections to condensed matter and outreach to the community.
