This award provides support for a three year continuing award, a renewal of the NIBIB-NSF Bioengineering and Bioinformatics Summer Institutes (BBSI) Program at Clemson University, entitled, BBSI in Biomaterials Science and Engineering at Clemson University, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Boland. The Departments of Bioengineering, Genetics, and Biochemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering and the School of Materials at Clemson University in collaboration with the Department of Surgery at the Greenville Hospital System will host a ten week summer program for a total of 15 undergraduate and graduate students per year. A total of 45 students will be impacted by this program over the next three years. The intellectual merit of this BBSI is centered on the Institute's goal to offer a unique didactic experience where students will learn the basic principles necessary for the understanding of medical device development, clinical applications, and failure assessment, and will apply these principles in state-of-the-art research projects. The broader impact of this BBSI focuses on motivating students to pursue a graduate career in bioengineering and addresses innovative technology for improving medical device performance. In addition to preparing and motivating students to successfully complete graduate programs in bioengineering through lectures, workshops, individual research projects, mentoring, seminars, and professional development, the renewal BBSI program will include a Graduate School Transition Program to better prepare students to succeed in bioengineering graduate programs.
