MRI: Acquisition of a Fluorescence-activated Cell Sorter and an Ultracentrifuge for Collaborative Research and Teaching at Hampshire College

This award is for the acquisition of a preparative ultracentrifuge for an active undergraduate research-teaching program in the areas of immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology and microbiology. The ultracentrifuge will be used to study the fate of organic molecules and the microbial community associated with metabolism in petroleum-containing hydrothermal sediments, and it will be used in efforts to purify and isolate the proteins associated with arsenic metabolism.This ultracentrifuge will be integral for undergraduate research and educational purposes, and it will be available for use by students in the local five-college consortium. All students at this undergraduate college are required to complete independent research projects, some of which will use the ultracentrifuge. The college has been successful at recruiting women and minorities to the sciences through outreach programs.
