Objective--Metallic ferromagnets suffer from relatively high Ghz relaxation rates, with ferromagnetic resonance frequency line broadening 100 MHz. The PI will explore "active" suppression of relaxation using precessionally pumped spin currents, studied using a novel dual-frequency ferromagnetic resonance technique. Intellectual merit--The proposed research will develop understanding of spin momentum transfer (SMT)-related effects in magnetic heterostructures, and have the potential of demonstrating a device application for spin pumping, a theoretically well developed but experimentally under-studied cousin phenomenon under SMT. Broader Impact--The proposed research has potential as an enabling technology for high-Q, integrated Ghz frequency-domain devices using ferromagnetic thin films. Improved performance will be explored directly in a well-developed Ghz device on GaAs. Thematically related outreach to rural, urban, and suburban K-8 students, through the joint development of a hands-on demonstration exhibit of magnetic information storage technology, will be developed in partnership with the Children's Museum of Science and Technology in Troy, NY.
