A Computer Science Day with Dr. Tapia, Spelbots, and CENS: Creating Excitement About Computer Science and Recognition that Someone Like Me? Can Be A Computer Scientist

The University of California at Los Angeles proposes to develop and run a workshop o- a "Computer Science Day" - for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). This workshop will capitalize on the community of teachers and students that are working with the PIs on a current BPC grant that aims to engage and assist LAUSD in offering AP Computer Science at high schools with high minority enrollments. The workshop will expose students, teachers and counselors to the excitement of computing with talks and demonstrations by Dr. Richard Tapia, a representative from the Spelbots Team (a team of Spelman College students who have participated in international robotics competitions with their soccer-playing robot dogs), and representatives from the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS). A CD will be created as a record of the event for use in settings with other urban high school students.
