MRI: Acquisition of New Culture Chambers for the CCMP

An award has been made to the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences under the direction of Dr. Robert A. Andersen to acquire new culture chambers for the Culture Collection of Marine Phytoplankton. Living culture of phytoplankton are essential for researchers who wish to study in detail the physiology, ecology, and genetics of these organisms isolated from their oceanic habitat. The collection is a vital resource for more than 500 scientists worldwide who use the cultures in basic and applied research on phytoplankton. The new culture chambers will replace old dilapidated chambers that were installed more than 20 years ago and are in danger of catastrophic failure. The laboratory holds an annual week-long course on phytoplankton culturing techniques, and hosts open houses for universities, colleges, local schools and the general public.
