GottliebDMS-0802974 The overall goal of this project is to prepare undergraduatemathematics students for, and engage them in, a sustainedresearch experience in computational mathematics. The PI and hercolleagues at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth integrateresearch in scientific computing into the undergraduatecurriculum by designing research-based courses from the Freshmanlevel upwards, and engaging upper-level students in a sustainedand significant research experience. The project creates anintegrated undergraduate research experience by engaging studentsin research from the introductory level through graduation, completely embedding research into the undergraduate curriculum. The essence of this approach is to mentor students into genuineresearch problems and research methods in computational science, beginning with senior high school students for recruitmentpurposes, freshman and sophomore students for orientation toresearch in computational science through carefully selectedresearch topics, and culminating in major senior undergraduateresearch projects where an expected outcome is professionalpresentation at a SIAM, AMS or MAA meeting, and preparation of apublishable research paper. An integral part of this projectinvolves the identification, training, and support of studentsfrom groups not normally well-represented in scientificcomputing, to encourage and support diversity in this field. This project engages students in an integrated program that leadsthem from the use of computational tools in course work to thedevelopment and use of computational tools in research projects. It serves as a model for a curriculum that stimulates researchactivity in computational science as an integral part of amathematics degree program, from the freshman year onwards. The overriding goal of this project is to include andintegrate research activities into the undergraduate mathematicscurriculum. This program revolutionizes the teaching ofmathematics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth byincluding research-based activities in courses across theundergraduate mathematics curriculum. This project has asignificant impact on the structure of undergraduate courses byintroducing research seminars from the freshman year, linkingstudents across year levels in common goals and cohorts, andstimulating new research-based courses in computational science. Furthermore, outreach to high school students and theirmathematics teachers has an impact on awareness of the field ofcomputational mathematics and careers in computational science. The approach of this project recognizes that students can beattracted to and prepared for a career in scientific computing byengaging in genuine research-based activities throughout theirundergraduate education. The benefit of this approach is that itbuilds a stronger and more diverse population of computationalscientists by attracting talented students to the field ofscientific computing and training them in the tools and analysisof numerical methods for solution of various real-world problems. The project is supported by the MPS Division of MathematicalSciences, the MPS Office of Multidisciplinary Activities, and theEHR Division of Undergraduate Education.
